Made for Susi Gwyn the bulldog clip was an adventure into the branch of surrealism recognised by Marcel Duchamp and Claes Oldenburg. I made the object using 3mm sheet steel, manipulating the different shapes with a fly-press. Beyond the capabilities of my own steel rollers the barrel was rolled at A G Bicknell Boiler Makers at the Hollycombe steam collection. Like all the pieces I made for this commission it was galvanised and left to weather.
It was later exhibited at the Chichester Cathedral Festival.
There also exists a smaller version that was bought by a collector at a later date. Progeny of the giant version it was inspired by my method of keeping receipts at the time! Also by the way that the giant bulldog clip that I made had such good qualities; great Form, a sense of the Absurd and a powerful object to make on a large scale, normally being so small and perfect for galvanising.
