I made several pieces for the St Marys exhibition; having the floor-space of a functioning church that held religious services for baptisms, funerals and marriages was inspiring. Origami Congratulations Birds are traditionally folded for wedding guests in the East sometimes in their hundreds; one for every guest. This time the sculpture took shape from the idea of a white origami bird, still to the human eye cleaning up the church after weddings. Flapping around picking up fallen confetti like The Metal Chicken picking up scrap iron in the Clangers. The nest is made up of steel confetti: petals, horse-shoes, keys, love-hearts, diamonds and stars and the bird was made to look like it was folded like paper . Welding the small pieces of steel together for the nest in this way always has a magnetic feel to it . There is a great Chinese food shop just down the road and I hope they came and had a look. It was another statement in the church context about different cultural takes on religion; like the homing pigeon being released by many miners after their shifts down the mines; the good luck paper bird, the metal chicken and the biblical dove of peace may all be related.
