Comprises a running figure from the Whitehaven to Ennerdale Cyclepath project that is exhaling a cloud of breath and a cylindrical form that looks like a combination barrel lock. Letter punched into the surface is a riddle best read by two people that features in Robert Grave's book The White Goddess. It is galvanised and polished.
I was very interested in the book for a long time finding it a great source of inspiration. Particularly interesting is the way Graves connects seemingly unrelated elements in his analysis of poetry and through that the roots of creative thought. Its sister piece was the Whistle based upon an Acme Thunderer that was intended to hang beside the Pillar. It found a place as a sign in Littlehampton and signifies the breath of life as well as the start of a race.
Discover what it is:
The strong creature from before the Flood
Without flesh, without bone,
Without vein, without blood,
Without head, without feet...
in field, in forest...
Without hand, without foot.
It is also as wide
As the surface of the earth,
And it was not born,
Nor was it seen...
